There is an appealing history to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is illegal. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that contains numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 tables.
